Short answer · the booking app worked example below
$53,000 built AI-native, $84,000 at typical agency effort
App development cost is hours times rate, plus a few fees. In 2026 the hours depend on how the app is built: with AI coding tools a small team needs far fewer build hours, while testing, store release and stakeholder time barely change. The rates are the most sourced part (BLS, Clutch, Accelerance); both hour models are published on the methodology page.
Code is one line of seven on this estimate.
Hours by category: AI-native / agency-quoted
Accent bar: AI-native hours. Grey bar: agency-quoted hours. Both are this site's published hour models, priced at Clutch's US development company band midpoint. Where a line marked not compressed still differs, it is because the agency model sets testing and project time as shares of its larger build hours. Methodology
A worked example, line by line
Our booking app example (iOS and Android from one cross-platform codebase, standard complexity, sign-up, profiles, push, booking, card payments, maps, analytics, one integration, managed backend, custom design), priced at the midpoint of Clutch's US development company band ($74.50 an hour):
| Category | AI-native h | AI-native $ | Agency h | Agency $ | Did AI compress it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Design | 92 h | $6,900 | 160 h | $12,000 | Partly. AI speeds variants and assets; product decisions and user testing do not compress. |
| App and backend build | 170 h | $13,000 | 507 h | $38,000 | Yes, the most. Agent-assisted coding and modern scaffolding produce screens, CRUD and glue quickly. |
| Auth, payments and integrations | 113 h | $8,400 | 216 h | $16,000 | Partly. Managed providers and generated glue help; webhooks, edge cases and security settings still take careful hours. |
| Code review and hardening | 81 h | $6,000 | in build | Grew. More generated code means more to read, test for security and harden before release. | |
| Testing across devices | 144 h | $11,000 | 145 h | $11,000 | No. Devices, edge cases and store sandboxes take about as long as they did. |
| Release and app-store cycles | 26 h | $1,900 | in testing | No. Store review runs on Apple's and Google's timetable, not yours. | |
| Project and stakeholder time | 83 h | $6,200 | 103 h | $7,700 | Partly. A smaller team needs less coordination, but decisions, sign-offs and meetings run at human speed. |
| Total | 709 h | $53,000 | 1,131 h | $84,000 |
Ranges for the same scope: $28,000 to $105,000 built AI-native (0.8 to 1.5 times its hours at $50 to $99), and $48,000 to $151,000 at agency-quoted effort (0.85 to 1.35 times). Most of the gap sits in the build line; testing is close to level. Open this example in the calculator.
Driver 1: platforms
Writing an app once for iPhone and once for Android roughly doubles the app-side work. Cross-platform frameworks share most of the code. In the agency-quoted model, app-side hours are multiplied by 1.0 for one platform, 1.25 for one cross-platform codebase, 1.9 for two native codebases and 0.9 for a web app; the AI-native model uses 1.15, 1.55 and 0.85, because agent-assisted porting makes a second codebase cheaper. More on mobile platforms and web apps.
Driver 2: features
A small number of features carry most of the cost: real-time chat, social feeds, admin dashboards, booking engines and offline sync. Our hour allowance for each is on the cost by feature page, with dollar figures at three sourced rates.
Driver 3: backend
A managed backend (Firebase, Supabase or similar) replaces much of the server code with configuration. In the agency-quoted model it takes 60% of the server-side feature hours of a custom backend, with a 40-hour set-up instead of 160. Connecting to an API you already run costs least.
Driver 4: who builds it
The published rates, all read on 2 October 2026:
- Clutch, US development companies: $50 to $99 an hour (Software Development Pricing Guide, updated 21 September 2026).
- Clutch, app development companies overall: $25 to $49 an hour (App Development Pricing Guide, same date).
- Accelerance 2026: senior developers $60 to $75 in Latin America, $64 to $76 in Europe, $31 to $41 in Asia; junior developers $33 to $45, $31 to $39 and $24 to $31 respectively.
- BLS, US employees: software developers earned a median $65.38 an hour in May 2025; wages were 70.0% of private-industry employer costs in June 2026 (BLS ECEC), so the employer cost of that median is about $93.40 an hour.
Driver 5: AI, in both directions
AI coding tools have not produced an agreed discount on build hours: controlled studies point in opposite directions, and published rate bands are still in the ranges above. What AI did add is a new running cost for apps with AI features, a monthly model API bill that the calculator prices from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google pricing pages. The evidence is set out in how AI changed app development costs.
Driver 6: what happens after launch
Upkeep is priced like the build, in hours. Apple raises its minimum Xcode and SDK version for App Store uploads each spring and Google Play raises its target API level each August, so an app that is not updated eventually cannot ship fixes. See maintenance cost.
Published project averages
Clutch reports an average app development project cost of $90,780.11 and an average software development project cost of $132,480.29, with usual timelines of about 11 and 13 months. These describe projects reviewed on Clutch, not a typical price for any one scope.
Questions
What is the formula for app development cost?+
Build cost is the hours each workstream needs multiplied by the hourly rate of whoever does it, summed across design, app development, backend, testing and project management. Fixed fees such as the Apple Developer Program (99 USD a year) and Google Play registration (US$25 once) are added on top, and upkeep is priced the same way as the build: hours times rate.
Why do app development quotes vary so much?+
Because both halves of the formula vary. Published hourly bands run from the low $20s (Accelerance's junior developers in Asia) to over $100 (our employer-cost figure for a 75th percentile US developer), and two firms reading the same brief can assume very different scope. Comparing quotes line by line in hours, rather than in total dollars, shows which of the two is driving the gap.
Is Clutch's $25 to $49 an hour figure the US rate?+
Not clearly. Clutch's App Development Pricing Guide gives $25 to $49 an hour as the average cost of hiring an app development company and also lists the United States at $25 to $49, while its Software Development Pricing Guide lists the United States at $50 to $99. We show both, attributed, and the calculator uses the $50 to $99 band for its US development company option.
How much of an app budget goes on testing and project management?+
In the agency-quoted model, testing is 20% of app and backend hours and project management is 10% of all other hours. The AI-native model counts testing bottom-up per feature and per platform instead, because device testing does not shrink when code is written faster, and it adds explicit code review and store release lines. Both are our planning assumptions, set out on the methodology page.
Does using AI coding tools make apps cheaper to build?+
Accelerance's 2026 rate post attributes part of the recent fall in outsourcing rates to automation and AI-augmented developers, which is a rate effect. Whether a given team needs fewer hours for your scope is something to ask in the quote, line by line; this calculator does not apply a blanket AI discount.
